For this weeks #tbtPrimelite we’re highlighting a 1970s Primelite catalog page featuring our “Spanish “D” Lights” Series of pendant & ceiling lights. Original designed in-house and manufactured of wrought iron in our Freeport, NY warehouse, these fixtures were available in some of the most fashionable 1970 colors, including avocado, mustard, earth brown, apple green and burnt orange. Very popular at the time, these fixtures were the height of 1970s suburban home and kitchen elegance!

Our #then&now this week compares our 1970s “Spanish ‘D’ Lights” with Primelite’s current Globe Pendant series. Sleek and modern, our globes are available in clear, smoke and opal and in round, ellipsoid, cube and deco-inspired shapes. (catalog B / page 6A)

Last week was International Dark Sky Week, a week that draws attention to problems associated with light pollution and promoting simple solutions available to mitigate it.

The nighttime environment is a precious natural resource for all life on Earth, but the glow of uncontrolled outdoor lighting has hidden the stars and changed our perception of the night. Until recently, for all of human history, our ancestors experienced a sky brimming with stars – a night sky that inspired science, religion, philosophy, art and literature, including some of Shakespeare’s most famous sonnets.

The natural night sky is our common and universal heritage, yet is rapidly becoming unknown to the newest generations…Experiencing the night sky provides perspective, inspiration, and leads us to reflect on our humanity and place in the universe. With it’s LEDs nestled in the prismatic top, light faces down while avoiding any uplight lightspill. #1235 is available with either a LED40 (equal to 70w MH) or LED52 (125w MH) and fits any of our 3″ posts.

#tbtPrimelite: While combing through the Primelite archives, we came across a series of original black and white photographs from our 1960 catalogs. Among the photos was this brass “pull down” or “pulley” pendant. A true representative of the space-age estethic of the time. With a 1960s modern design, this “pull-down” fixture would be at home in any contemporary retro installation.

#tbtPrimelite: This weeks #ThrowbackThursday once again features our “Glamour Globes” from the 1970’s. For use in both interior and exterior applications, our fashion forward globes were heavily influenced by the disco era and were constructed of polycarbonate and embedded with crackle chips creating the metallic finish shown. Available in the fashionable colors of the time, including green, gold, blue, red, and white. These globes were, and still are, the definition of “cool”!

One of our most popular lighting styles, Primelite’s globes are no longer just round! Today Primelite offers globes in many shapes; including cube, ellipsoid, “deco”, and round. Once again strolling through our neighborhood has left us pleasantly surprised after running into “family!” While wandering the streets of Freeport NY, we spotted our Gooseneck Light #20/850 brightening a local restaurant, Chévere. This “Modern Latin Kitchen” is well regarded and well reviewed (4 ½ stars*), and we’re happy to see our gooseneck lights illuminating the way to this popular establishment. #tbtPrimelite 1970s Character Globe Lights

#tbtPrimelite: Now here’s a real blast from the past! Our selection of 1970s globes included these hand painted character globes. Inspired by the children’s doll “Raggedy Ann” and clowns, these globes were Primelite’s first foray into childrens lighting fixtures.

Working with a local artist, who hand painted each globe, our “Raggedy Ann” and “Harlequie” and “Halequina” clown characters were popular children’s themes. Raggedy Ann was, and is, a classic, and clowns have always been favorite characters with children. Primary used in childrens bedrooms these fixtures were popular throughout the ’70s decade.

#then&now: While these hand painted character face globes were Primelite’s first children’s lighting fixtures, we’ve continued to offer childrens fixtures through the years. As styles and themes have changed, so have the themes of our childrens fixtures. In 2015 our childrens light fixtures have a sports related theme.
